The incumbent NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi has justified why officials of the Electoral Commission were not present during voting in his constituency last Saturday.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) recently held its primaries where a massive tsunami occured leading to the defeat of 41 incumbent MPs.

Prior to the primaries, the party indicated that there will be no voting in two constituencies: Subin and Asante Akyem North because of a court injunction.

However, the primaries were conducted in these constituencies despite the injunction and without the presence of EC officials.

According to incumbent MPs in these two constituencies, they didn't see any injunction order.

During an interview on Neat FM's 'Me Man Nti' programme, Hon. Appiah-Kubi who had 501 votes after the election in Asante Akyem North was asked why the electoral body was not present.

He said: "our constitutional provisions says it is the party that runs election; the Electoral Commission is the Supervisor . . ."

According to him, "we can invite them (EC) to come and supervise but if that supervision is not provided, it doesn't mean" the election is not valid or legal.

" . . the party organises elections, the EC organises general elections and not sectional . . . as far as I am concerned I submitted myself to the process," he explained.

Meanwhile, his opponent, a former MP, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang who had only 1 vote insists there has not been any election in the Asante Akyem North constituency.
