NDC Elects Wiredu As Parliamentary Candidate For Fanteakwa North

A former Eastern Regional Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Haruna Apaw Wiredu, has been elected as the party’s parliamentary candidate for Fanteakwa North in the December polls.

He defeated Mr Godwin Mawuli Ametwogo and Dr Kwaku Owusu Acheampong who decided to step down at the 11th hour but it was too late to take his name off the ballot paper.

Mr Wiredu had 879 votes as against Mr Ametwogo's 85 and Dr Acheampong's three.

Total votes cast were 967 of which two were rejected.

In all, 1,126 delegates were expected to cast their votes but 157 could not make it.

Interlocutory injunction

The NDC primary, which should have been held in the constituency on August 24, 2019, had to be postponed due to an interlocutory injunction slapped on it at the Koforidua High Court by Mr Foster Owusu, a former constituency organiser for the Fanteakwa North.

An official of the Electoral Commission, Mr Seth Kofi Darko declared Mr Wiredu the winner on Saturday,(June 27 ) after the election at Begoro.

An elated Mr Wiredu expressed appreciation to the delegates as well as his competitors for a decent election despite an earlier court injunction.

Unite to forge ahead

Mr Wiredu asked supporters of the party to continue to remain loyal to enable the NDC win the forthcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

"Today is a victory for the NDC and not for any individual person, we have to put everything behind us and come together as one people with a common destiny to win the December elections", he stressed.

On the new voters registration exercise scheduled for June 30 - August 6, he urged all NDC supporters as well as first-time voters to come out in their numbers to register to enable them to participate in the December general election.
