Where Are We Heading As A Nation With This Endemic Political Violence? - Prof. Joseph Osafo

Head of Psychology at the University of Ghana, Prof. Joseph Osafo has condemned the violent acts at various registration centres across the country.

Chaos recently broke out at a registration centre at the Awutu Senya East constituency which resulted in the Member of Parliament for the area firing gunshots to disperse people she believed were after her life.

Also, a similar incident occurred at Banda resulting in the demise of one person and calling for military reinforcement to beef up security in the area.

There are other places that confusion has erupted over who is qualified  or not to register his or her name at some registration centres in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

Contributing to a panel discussion on 'Kokrokoo' on Peace FM, Prof. Joseph Osafo asked; ''Where are we really heading towards as a nation?''

The Psychologist wondered why there appears to be political violence any time there is an election or election-related activities in the nation.

According to him, this trend has become very disturbing and so warned Ghanaians to refrain from perpetrating violence in the nation because it is gradually dragging the country into the abyss.

''Where are we pushing our nation to with this sharp division between NDC and NPP? We're not heading towards anywher . . . .The political violence in Africa is getting endemic. We have to be careful. It is becoming an attitude. It's becoming a culture that in every year or any time that there is election, whether district assembly, Parliamentary or national, by all means someone must get hurt. We should get over that.

''I strongly believe that as we move forward as a nation, we have to be careful that political leadership doesn't lead Ghana into crisis,” he advised.
