Promotion For Students Will Be Based On Merit - Dep Education Minister

Deputy Education Minister in charge of Basic & Secondary Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has hinted that there will be an automatic promotion after school children resume in 2021.

This follows the postponement of the 2019/2020 academic calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Akufo-Addo in his 16th address to the nation announced that the next academic calendar will resume January 2021.

"The Ghana Education Service, after further consultations, has decided to postpone the remainder of the academic year for all nursery, kindergarten, primary, JHS 1 and SHS 1 students. The next academic year will resume in January 2021, with appropriate adjustments made to the curriculum, to ensure that nothing is lost from the previous year" he said.

Speaking in an interview on Kumasi-based Hello FM, Dr. Adutwum explained that pupils in class 1, for instance, will be promoted to class 2.

"The good news is that; the Junior High Three students have completed so their space will be left vacant for those behind to fill that space..."

According to him, those in class 1 for instance "will go to class two automatically. You change the school calendar and make additions: if they are to stay in the school for 180 days, you make it 190 then they catch up gradually..."
