We Ain't Afraid Of Amidu’s Investigation Into Agyapa Deal - Majority Leader

Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu says the Office of the Special Prosecutor seeking to establish whether the controversial Agyapa Royalty deal has the potential to promote corruption does not put any fear in government.

According to him, the government has a clean conscience on the Agyapa Royalty deal, making the request of the Office of the Special Prosecutor a piece of welcoming news to put the brouhaha surrounding the deal to rest.

Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, Hon. Osei Kyei Bonsu said that the Office of the Special Prosecutor has the mandate to investigate any corruption in the public sector, thus, there is nothing wrong if the addition of the Agyapa deal to the list of investigations he is working on will help his course.

“I don’t see anything wrong with his request for information on the Agyapa deal in order to investigate any corruption in the deal because that is his mandate as a Special Prosecutor. I know there are a lot of investigations he is doing which may be incomplete yet and if the addition of the Agyapa deal will help his course, why not. We have a clean conscience on the Agyapa deal and so we are not afraid of his investigation into the Agyapa deal”, he said.

He added that Martin Amidu’s investigation will rather help to establish whether what the government is doing in the Agyapa deal is good or not; suggesting that the renowned lawyer may not find anything wrong in the deal but will be able to come up with the alternative idea about a section in the deal to help the execution properly.

“His investigation will rather help to establish whether what the government is doing with the Agyapa deal is good or not. Maybe he will come out to say he did not find any corruption in the deal but will be able to offer an alternative idea about a section in the deal to help the execution of the deal properly”.

“In nation-building, and governance, it is necessary to move the nation forward and whatever you do, you may not always get it 100 percent correct and so if he is able to come out with an alternative to help the Agyapa deal, it is better for all of us”.

The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs maintained that there is nothing wrong with the demand of the Office of the Special Prosecutor as he is also one person with in-depth knowledge and has a rich background in politics to be able to ascertain the truth in the Agyapa deal.

“Per what I have seen, I have not seen anything wrong, and let’s give it to him. He is also one person who is in-depth with knowledge and has a rich background in politics. Apart from what he is doing, if we give him the Agyapa deal to look at it, there is no wrong. If he is not able to find anything wrong in the deal, it will end up exonerating the government once and for all”, he indicated.

He however was of the concern as to how the letter was written on 10th September 2020 to Parliament and found its way to some media houses in the country the next day as they were asking why Parliament has not honored the request of Martin Amidu on the Agyapa deal as the House had just received the request.

“I was a bit surprised because you wrote a letter today and the next day, it is in the public domain, I don’t know the intent behind it. I don’t want to believe that the Special Prosecutor after writing to Parliament on the Agyapa deal, leaked the letter to the media houses”, he wondered.
