'Presidential Position Not Meant For Political Jokers' – Obiri Boahen On GH¢100,000 Filing Fees

NPP’s Deputy General Secretary, Nana Obiri Boahen says the Electoral Commission’s presidential filing fee is perfect for the position.

“I don’t see anything wrong with that, it's presidential so there is nothing wrong,” he said.

Nana Obiri Boahene however urged persons who wish to contest for the December general elections to get out of the contest if they believe the filing fee is too high for them to raise.

According to him, it is “immaterial” for any political party that wishes to lead the country raise concerns about the filing fees.

“Aspiring for the position of a President is a serious business. With due respect, it is not meant for political jokers. It’s for serious minded people,” he told Mac Jerry Osei Agyeman on Neat FM’s morning show 'Ghana Montie'.

The Electoral Commission at a press conference in Accra on Monday announced that the presidential nominees for the upcoming 2020 elections are required to pay an amount of GH¢100,000 as filing fees to enable them to partake in the elections.

The Commission also announced a filing fee of GH¢10,000 for parliamentary nominees.

The monies are to be paid through a banker’s draft and they must all file their nominations between Monday, 5 October, and Friday, 9 October.
