Eastern Regional FDA Schools Food Vendors, Bakers & Meat Shops Operators On Food Safety And Good Hygienic Practices

The Eastern Regional office of the Food and Drugs Authority says during their routine surveillance activities which is mandated by the Public Health Acts 2012, Acts 851 within the region they chance upon some food vendors, bakers and meat shop owners who are operating without certification of the authority and training has been organized for them toward licensing of their facility to ensure compliance.

Speaking at the launch of the training program, the Eastern regional boss of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Mr. Samuel Kwakye said the aim of the sensitization training is geared toward helping them to know what the law is required of them and also help them to set up their place properly to regularize their operations for them to continue their work in the streamline of the law.

According to him, the training is not going to stop but it would continue at any time they chance on anybody who is not working in compliance with the law.

He assured participants of the authority’s support in doing their business so that their products on the market are safe for consumption.

Mr Kwakye reiterated that the FDA’s main objective is to ensure quality, efficacy and safety of food, drugs, household chemicals, cosmetic, tobacco and medical devices to ensure public safety and not interested in destroying peoples business.

Also, the Head of Industrial Support Service Unit of the Eastern Regional Office of the FDA, Mr. Peter Alordji advised all participants who are into chop bars and all food vendors to buy their ingredients from approved and known source in order to ensure that their raw materials are of right quality and for traceability purposes.

Mr Alordji advised them to keep proper records of their activities and caution them to adhere to good manufacturing practices to ensure that the food they prepare for sale are of quality and free from any microbial contaminants which will make the food unwholesome.

“He said the authority has the power to close any facility whose activities poses threat to the public” he added.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the FDA, Mr George Ampofo Ayeh said the authority will soon crack the whip on people who are operating without certification and called on all producers, manufacturers, importers, exporters of food, drugs to regularize their operations in line with the provisions of the FDA.

Participants who benefited from the training were grateful to the authority for organizing such a training for them, because the knowledge acquired will guide them in doing their business to ensure that people who patronize their services and goods are safe and they promise to share the news with their colleagues who were not present at the training.
