Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan has supported calls for an air-tight security detail for Members of Parliament (MPs) in the country.

Discussions about whether all MPs should be given security escort have dominated the air waves due to the recent unfortunate incident involving Mfantseman MP.

The Mfantseman MP, Hon. Ekow Kwansah Hayford was shot dead by highway robbers in the Central Region on his return from a campaign trip. 

The robbers reportedly shot the deceased after realizing he is a Member of Parliament and blaming him for their woes.

Following the MP's demise, there are heated arguments regarding the security of the lawmakers.

Contributing to Peace FM's ''Kokrokoo'' programme, Hon. Kwamena Duncan argued that the MPs deserve an enhanced security protection due to the nature of their work.

He noted that when a person becomes an MP, he or she is faced with an avalanche of expectations from his or her constituents.

To him, the security of the lawmakers shouldn't be undermined because ''if Parliament doesn't function, indeed our governance system will not function''.

''The truth of the matter also is this, that much is expected from the Member of Parliament. When a Member of Parliament goes to his/her community, there might be an engineer, there might be a medical doctor, there might be all these professionals but the community looks to the direction of the MP that he or she is the person who has what it is to support...After becoming a Member of Parliament, they don't continue to look at you before you became a Member of Parliament but that once you have become a Member of Parliament, you must in a certain class," he emphasized.

According to him, tightening the security nuts of the lawmakers will ensure none of them go through the unfortunate incident that has befallen their colleague.

"Are we waiting for another case (God forbid)? And if that happens, I'm wondering the blame that will come in tonnes that will be heaped on the President and be heaped on the government," he said.
