European Union Joins Fight To End "Saiko" In Ghana

Team leader and head of Sector Infrastructure and Sustainable Development section, European Union in Ghana, Roberto Schiliro has called on Ghanaians to join the fight against illegal transshipment on the sea known as (Saiko) to ensure sustainability of the fisheries resources.

According to him, about three million people and families feed on the industry saying "it is therefore important that Ghanaian society as well as the Ghanaian businesses to join in the fight.

"We are not comfortable about this. We should end 'Saiko' once and for all so to ensure sustainability to the fisher folks, fish mongers and the economy at large”, he stated.

"If a democracy is not able to ensure legality and the rule of law then that democracy is a problem, so, I urge all those who can support or help to hear the cry of the fishing communities and act immediately," he further said.

He noted that Ghana has sufficient laws in place to deal with the canker and called on all stakeholders to apply the laws of the country.

Mr Schiliro made the call on securing fish landing site for fishermen in British Komenda, a suburb in Elmina in the Central Region.

This, he said, was necessary to secure economic activity of the Fisher folks  and also for  sustainability.

Fisheries programmes manager of Environmental Justice Foundation, Socrates Segbor also emphasized the need to take steps to register landing site at British Komenda for the benefit of the fishing community aimed at empowering fisher folks.
