NPP Can Stay In Power For A Longer Period If… - Charles Bissue

Western Regional Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Charles Onua Wontor Bissue says his party stands the chance to stay in government for a long time due to the outcome of 2020 general election results.

Describing the just-ended 2020 general elections as a shocking revelation, the Presidential Staffer said his party losing many Parliamentary seats to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is a wakeup call for all and sundry.

Using the Western Region Parliamentary election results as a case study, he mentioned that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) which used to have 13 seats out of the 17 seats in the 2016 elections is now down with 9 seats and the opposition NDC moving from 4 to 8 seats.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Mr. Onua Wontor Bissue said that the 2020 general election has disclosed the voter psychology as the electorates may be looking beyond the achievements of the government.

He again mentioned that the voting pattern of Ghanaians indicate that the manifesto promises played one role and the data, the personality and the message also played another role in influencing their choice in 2020 general elections.

“The 2020 election was about three things; the data of the voter population, the personality and the message to the people. If you look at 2020 general election, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo did very well but most of his MPs performed poorly in the election,” he indicated.

“We have to look at it closely because I believe that what has happened is good for the NPP and Ghana at large . . . we have to study the voter psychology to know what informs the voter to cast a ballot. In 2008, we lost power to complacency and it is good we have seen this sign in this election so that we go back to the drawing table and don’t repeat our mistake in 2008 election,” he noted.

He was of the view that the outcome of the 2020 general election has given a different dimension to the voting system in the past which has always been 8 years for a political party; thus, the current voting pattern depicts that the NPP can remain in power for a long time if it does its homework effectively.
