Election 2020: I Was Shocked By NDC's Parliamentary Performance - Effah Dartey

The outcome of both the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections have convinced the leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Captain Nkrabea Effah Dartey(Rtd) that the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is indeed a national party.

According to the private legal practitioner, the shocking results in the Parliamentary Election with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) moving from 106 Parliamentarians to peg at 137 seats with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is enough to conclude that the opposition is indeed a national party.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, the renowned criminal lawyer insisted that it is overwhelming to note that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is commanding 14 out of 16 regions.

He reiterated that the opposition NDC is made up of Ewes, Northerners, Ga people, Fantes and other people all over the country; thus, it is disturbing to note that ruling NPP is commanding only 2 regions being Eastern and Ashanti.

“With the Parliamentary results of the NDC, I was shocked and the NDC is indeed a national party. They are made up of Ewes, Northerners, Ga people, Fantes and others all over the country. If you look at the map of Ghana, out of the 16 regions, NPP is commanding only 2 regions, Eastern and Ashanti and this is disturbing,” he wondered.

He advanced his argument that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is different from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in terms of the way the former does its politics as it has expanded its electoral college to include all card-bearing members in the selection of Parliament Candidates, unlike the ruling NPP where some selected members called delegates are the kingmakers in the party.

He stressed that the selected kingmakers in the ruling NPP have created a problem for the party as they can easily be camped and bribed to select a candidate who may not appeal to the general public.

He again lambasted the National Executives of the NPP for giving instructions from Accra to allow certain people to go unopposed against the will of the people; hence, creating disaffection in the party.

“I will say that NPP is the best party in Ghana but the way we select our Parliamentary Candidates it upsets people and they decide not to vote for the party. Honestly, if the NDC put their acts together, they can beat us in 2024 general elections,” he pontificated.
