Don't Force Students To Take COVID-19 Test - GES Warns School Authorities
Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Professor Kwasi Opoku Amankwa has warned all schools, particularly private schools, not to coerce any pupil or student to undertake a COVID-19 test before coming back to school.
Pupils at Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High School (JHS) students, in both private and public, will be back to school on Friday, 15th January 2021 after long months of stay in the house.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced this in his 21st update on COVID-19 on Sunday, January, 3.
Also, all SHS 1 students will begin classes on 10th March, starting with students embarking on a single-track academic calendar.
SHS 2 and SHS 3 students will also return to school on 18th January.
In an interview with sit-in host Nana Yaw Kesseh on 'Kokrokoo' on Peace FM, Prof. Opoku Amankwa stated that there is currently no law banning students who haven't tested for COVID-19 from going to school, hence there should be no pressure for them to undergo a test.
He noted that it is only the Ghana Health Service that has the mandate to determine whether or not there should be testing before school reopening.
"We plead with them not to make any such order because it is the duty of the Ghana Health Service. If they introduce a law that we must test before school reopening, then we do that. So, no one should prevent any student from coming to school for not undergoing a test. The law doesn't permit it," he cautioned.
