COVID-19: Order For More Consumables Before It's Too Late - GAMLS Appeals To Government

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists has urged government to order more consumables for the testing and treating of COVID-19 cases before things get out of hand.

According to them, though they have enough in stock to handle the current situation, there should be a checkup before they run out of stock.

Speaking on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' program, Spokesperson for the Association, Dr. Dennis Adu-Gyasi explained that currently, they have enough stock to run the various test but they risk running out of stock should cases continue to increase astronomically on daily basis.

"The government has provided enough consumables for the various laboratories across the country to expedite testing for COVID-19 cases but as the cases keep increasing across the globe, there is likely to be a surge in demand for testing consumables. So we are appealing to the government to immediately order more testing consumables so that the country may not be in crisis should the cases continue to rise," he said.

Though the country and government have done exceptionally well in the past few months in the fight against COVID-19, celebrations and social gatherings during the festive season have contributed to the recent spike in the cases.

"Since the virus has an incubation period of 14 days, people who were infected during the festive season are now showing symptoms," he added.

Information Minister-designate, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says the country may be heading for tighter restrictions and a possible lockdown should the COVID-19 cases continue to rise.

At a press briefing Monday, he stated that considering the current trend where an average of 200 persons tested positive for the virus daily, the imposition of restrictions should be anticipated.

“Yes, there is a possibility of some more restriction being introduced especially with regard to how this trend is going. If these numbers keep rising where the average daily increases to 210-250 that means in five days we will be hitting about 1,000 plus."
