Govt Has Paid GHc 10 Billion To Road Contractors Over The Last Four Years - Roads Minister

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta has said the government of President Akufo-Addo is committed to settling arrears owed road contractors in the country and will definitely fulfill its obligation towards them.

Kwasi Amoako-Atta made the statement in response to a question on delayed payments to contractors when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament for vetting.

He said the government has paid a total of GHc 10 billion to road contractors over the last three to four years but more effort ought to be made to clear the remaining arrears.

Kwasi Amoako-Atta said the government's main focus within the next four years in the road sector will be on the construction of interchanges and dualization of major roads in the country such as the Accra-Takoradi road.

Responding to a suggestion by Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga on whether it will be helpful for the government to consider factoring the cost of roads constructed in neighborhoods in property rates collected by Assemblies to generate funds for road construction in neighborhoods, Hon Amoako-Atta said the suggestion is laudable, but it must be subjected to a national debate, and if the suggestion is accepted by the public then it can be considered by the government.
