The former MP of Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, is threatening to rally support on social media to boycott local businesses linked to members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) if a move to organise the #FixTheCountry protest is not allowed.

The police last week secured a court order to prevent the #FixTheCounry campaigners from embarking on a public protest on 9 May. The conveners described the move as an attempt by government to sabotage their campaign. 

Speaking to Beatrice Adu on The Big Bulletin, the former NDC MP said government must allow the organisers to demonstrate.

“I am sounding a word of caution that, if these things continue, there will be recriminations… their businesses would suffer,” he said.

Mubarak added: “We will make sure we use social media to galvanise Ghanaians to boycott certain businesses so that you don’t have these cultures of silence being perpetuated.”

“Let me sound a word of caution to organisations, businesses, media houses who are hounding out journalists for trying to hold the government to account that there will be recriminations. And one of the tools available to the ordinary Ghanaians is boycott…”

Mubarak also condemned some government officials for asking Ghanaians to “fix themselves” in the wake of demand by the youth “for government to fix the country”.

He said the recent attempt by the Chairman of the NPP, Freddie Blay, to link the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the #FixTheCountry protest is an insult to Ghanaians.
