Commercial Bank Workers On Warpath

Even before the storm generated by what Ghana Commercial Bank workers have called killer tax deductions from their take home pay could settle down, Citi News has picked up strong signals of renewed anger at the bank. This time around outraged workers of the nations biggest bank are set for a face-off with management over pay rise-related disagreements. On Friday May 27, 2011 the workers plan to hold early morning meetings around the country to serve notice of displeasure to management over salary-related issues. Citi News is reliably informed that workers of the bank are furious over between 3 and 12 percent pay rise proposed by Management of the bank for the year 2011. Coming on the heels of recent media publications, which gave detailed accounts of what critics have called fat sitting allowances for board members of the bank, the workers say the amount is a far cry from the over 50 percent pay increment-proposal their Union has put before management for consideration. Angry workers have described the proposed pay rise as peanuts, given what some have called increasing cost of living in Ghana. Citi News gathers that over the last decade, workers of the bank traditionally received between 15 to 25 percent pay rise every two years. With this in mind, the workers recently put before management a pay increment proposal of between 50 and 80 percent, citing recent public sector pay rises in line with the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure. However, in what some consider a major blow to the workers expectations, Management reportedly told the workers it cannot pay anything above the proposed 3 and 12 percent band -- a situation that has angered GCB workers round the country, some of whom are calling for a major industrial action.
