Two Ugandan MPs from the opposition National Unity Platform have been questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department, regarding a recent wave of murders in the central region of Greater Masaka.

Security forces have cordoned off the police station where Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya are being questioned.

Talking to journalists, police spokesperson Fred Enanga alleged that the two politicians were the masterminds behind the attacks and had held meetings with potential recruits just outside the capital, Kampala.

Mr Enanga said that they were promised money to carry out the attacks.

The two men have not yet responded to the allegations.

Twelve suspects have been arrested and charged with murder, while 11 others are expected to appear in court later this week.

At least 26 people have been killed and others injured by machete-wielding assailants since July.

The region has experienced at least two similar waves of killings over the past decade.
