Leaders of West Africa regional bloc Ecowas have been meeting in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, to discuss the political situation in Guinea.

It's the second time they've met since President Alpha Condé was overthrown 11 days ago.

The regional leaders were expected to discuss the findings of a delegation that was sent to assess the political situation in the country and plans to restore constitutional order.

Ecowas is demanding the release of the detained president and the establishment of a civilian-led transition as soon as possible.

Ecowas chairperson, Ghana's President Nana Akufo Addo said that the heads of state will take key decisions that would have serious implications for regional stability and democratic values.

There are indications the regional leaders could be considering sanctions and possibly appoint an envoy to lead the mediation efforts.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, who led the delegation to Guinea last week, said on Wednesday that the military junta has outlined certain conditions for Ecowas to meet before the ousted president could be released but did not disclose them.
