Chinese contractors working on the Sofoline road project in the Ashanti regional capital of Kumasi have asked hundreds of Ghanaian workers working on the project to go home due to lack of money to pay their wages. The workers went home last Friday May 27 after the contractors broke the news of their inability to pay their wages and promised to call them back when funds are available. The Chinese contractors have refused to comment on the development but are reportedly worried that funds for the project have not been forthcoming since the NDC government assumed office in 2009. The leader of the workers' union, Anthony Amankwa, told Citi News the workers are hoping government will release funds to enable them return to work soon. One of the workers who spoke on condition of anonymity told Citi News, �It�s true that they don�t have money and it is the problem of the government. The workers were told to hold on for the mean time so it is not like they have been sacked. "If they come to work and there is no money to pay them there could be a problem so they have been asked to present their bank account numbers through which their monies would be paid immediately it is available�. Kweku Boampong, resident engineer in the region expressed surprise at the development, telling Citi News he was unaware of the move. �It is not true that the workers have packed their tools and left; it�s not true. They are working on the road right now."
