Ghana has reportedly recorded the new Coronavirus variant, the Omicron.

This has been confirmed by the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's ''Kokrokoo'' Monday morning.

He revealed that the country has recorded thirty-four (34) Omicron cases but quickly added the virus hasn't spread on the community level.

He disclosed that all 34 cases were identified at the Kotoka International Airport stating majority of the people who tested positive came from ''Nigeria and the rest from South Africa plus another country where we recorded one''.

"So far, with our community sequencing, we haven't recorded Omicron but it's something we will continue to do whilst we prepare to deal with it. But the good thing is that, whether Omicron or Delta, the preventive mechanism is the same," he expounded.

On the Omicron, he noted that, "it spreads faster than the others but we have no evidence that it's a severe virus than Delta or Alpha when contracted".

In other to fight this new variant and all other variants, the GHS Director-General called for the enforcement of the Coronavirus preventive protocols.

"The vaccine remain the most potent mechanism that we are all using to protect ourselves," he emphasized.
