Augustine Eguavoen Steps Down As Super Eagles Coach After World Cup Heartbreak

Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down as head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria following the side's failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Eguavoen, 55, was appointed on an interim basis in December 2021 but failed to guide the team to the global stage.

Pressure has been mounting on him after Ghana qualified on the away goal rule following a 1-1 draw at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Tuesday.

He has now resigned from his role after the massive backlash due to the team's inability to secure a place in Qatar.

Multiple sources in Nigeria say he will return to his role as the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation.

Eguavoen, who is a former Nigeria U17 coach, had been talking tough ahead of the return fixture against the Black Stars.

But the Ghanaians turned party -poopers after drawing 1-1 in Abuja on Tuesday.

He supervised the team's disappointing 2021  Africa of Nations in Cameroon after being knocked  in the round-of-16 by Tunisia.
