Don’t Act In Excess of Your Right – P.C. Appiah Ofori Tells Speaker Bagbin

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker for the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa Constituency, P. C. Appiah Ofori, has questioned Speaker Alban Bagbin's leadership in parliament.

According to him, his ‘authoritative’ style of leadership is new to the House – yet can be challenged if necessary.

“He [Speaker Alban Bagbin] is the Chief Executive of the House and can give instruction. But his instructions must be right and must not conflict with other laws or rules. If otherwise, members of the House can challenge him,” he said.

PC Appiah Ofori was speaking on Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin’s decision to refer three New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs – Dome/Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong and Ayawaso Central MP Henry Quartey – to the Privileges Committee of the House for absenteeism.

He told NEAT FM’s morning show, 'Ghana Montie', that the act was wrong.

“He [Speaker Alban Bagbin] should not act in excess of his right. He should never do,” he told host Kwesi Aboagye.

P. C. Appiah Ofori, however, explained that, “If MPs absent themselves from parliament, you don’t refer them to the Privileges Committee, you ask them their reasons first before any decision.”
