Transportation Fares Not Increased Yet – GRTCC

The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) says there has not been any agreement to increase transportation fares yet.

According to the GRTCC secretary, they are yet to meet with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to agree on a 20% increase in transport fares.

“We have not to increase transportation fares,” Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah said in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show, Ghana Montie.

Last week, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) asked commuters to expect an increase in transport fares by Friday, May 13. This is according to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union.

The GPRTU claims the decision is a result of an increase in fuel prices over the last few months.

The union had in April this year, proposed that government scraps some taxes on petroleum products to cushion drivers and commuters, but President Akufo-Addo rejected the proposal.

At this year's May Day parade, the President revealed it will cost the nation some GH¢4 billion in revenue if that happens.

As a result, the GPRTU believes the only way to prevent their businesses from imminent collapse will be an increment in transportation fares, pointing out that the fare adjustment should have been done long ago, but that they had the public’s best interest at heart due to the challenges and increases in prices of commodities.

But Mr Ohene Yeboah told NEAT FM that the usual convention has always been for the Union to meet with the GRTCC and the Transport Ministry before any upward adjustment in transport fares is announced. And once that has not been done, he added, there cannot be an arbitrary and unilateral increase.

We can’t just impose any fare on the public. There must be a mutual understanding with all parties before the commencement of new fare,” He noted.
