Mercury-Free Gold Processor Will Help Protect Water Bodies – Mireku Duker Tells Critics

Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker says the introduction of mercury-free gold processing equipment, commonly referred to as ‘Gold Katcha’ will help protect water bodies in mining areas.

According to him, the government’s idea to purchase the 'Gold Katcha' is to boost small scale mining as well as protect our environments, he said on NEAT FM’s morning show, 'Ghana Montie'.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commissioned one hundred (100) mercury-free gold processing equipment for use by small-scale miners across the country.

Many have suggested that the acquisition of the equipment is rather a boost to the Galamsey operations.

But Mireku Duker said the equipment, as the name suggests, extracts gold without the use of mercury, which has been the practice for several decades.

He, however, denied claims that the equipment will be donated to Galamsey operators.

“No, that is what we are going to do,” he told host Mac Jerry Osei Agyemang.
