European Union Funded Social Protection Intervention Closes Chapter With Stakeholders

The European Union-funded Social Protection component under the Ghana Employment and Social Protection (GESP) Programme has organised a closing event for stakeholders after four years of implementation.

The social protection component focuses on enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of the social protection system in Ghana. The support forms part of a EUR 26 million Financing Agreement signed between the European Union and the Government
of Ghana in 2018.

The GESP Programme has been contributing to inclusive growth in Ghana by strengthening social protection and employment systems that are key to promoting decent job creation, adequate skills development and effective social schemes.

The project beneficiaries of the social protection component include. the Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection Office of the Head of the Local Government Service. Centre for Social Policy Studies. Institute of Local Government Studies and the School of Social Work.

The Head of Cooperation, European Union Delegation to Ghana, Mr Massimo Mina said the European Union has adopted its multi-annual indicative programme for Ghana for 2021-27, under its new Global Europe Instrument. The Programme Document takes the form of Joint programming for Ghana 2021-27, developed in a Team Europe spirit as well as the European Investments Bank(EIB).

He said they will Partner jointly commit to support in the areas of green growth for jobs, smart and sustainable cities and good governance and security by funding an amount of €203 million for the period of 2021-24 to reinforce the EU-Ghana Partnership and advance their common interests.

The Director General, Ghana Technical Vocational Education and Training Centre, (TVET), Mrs Mawusi Nudekor Awity encouraged local authorities to adopt such programmes as essential aspects of their local economy (LED), disability support, and women and youth development efforts.

The Government of Ghana is determined to make Technical and Vocational Education a priority and the creation of Ghana Technical and Vocational Edu Education and Training (TVET) service which was launched in December 2021 is evidence of this she said"
