Government Urged To Strengthen Tax Policies

Tax Justice Network Ghana, a newly-established civil society organization, has enjoined government to continue to pursue programmes aimed at strengthening tax policies in the country. The organization has also urged government to strengthen the capacity of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to monitor and collect all resource rents, particularly petroleum and mining revenues. In a communiqu� adopted at a strategic planning session in Kumasi, the organization tasked government to take steps to ensure tax compliance by using taxes in the supreme interest of the masses. The organization, which is made up of several society groups, encouraged the government to make a concerted effort to educate the general public on their tax obligations to increase the quantum of revenue. �We urge the government to take steps to review all mining and petroleum contracts with or without stability clauses as is the case in Tanzania, Zambia and other countries worldwide to increase government equity,� the communique stated. The strategic planning session was under the theme, �Tax Justice now.� It also implored government to grow and diversify the national economy through value addition to increase revenue to develop the country. Though the organization commended government�s effort in recent times to rationalize the revenue agencies, the organization urged government to develop a long-term development strategy so that right investment decisions could be made. The organization, whose major objective is to advocate fairness in the country�s tax regime, also tasked government to encourage a closer collaboration between revenue agencies and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to help deal with tax evasion and tax avoidance issues.
