The new acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr Eric Nkansah, has pledged to work to build on the image of service and improve education in the country.
According to him, having taught at various levels of education and also with experience as a director at the Education Ministry, he was familiar with issues relating to education development and thus was in a better position to help improve the sector.

“Having taught at various levels in the education sector and also worked at the Ministry of Education as a director, I am very much aware of the issues within the service and will work assiduously to achieve the desired outcomes,” Dr Nkansah said yesterday[October 25, 2022] when he introduced himself to the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, as he assumed office after his appointment by the President last week Wednesday.

Succession

Dr Nkansah takes over from Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, whose secondment contract was terminated last Tuesday for him to return to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) where he was.

Until his appointment, Dr Nkansah was the Director of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education.

Career

Over the last 15 years, Dr Nkansah has been working in the field of Finance and Education.

The 41-year-old Nkansah joined the Ministry of Education in April 2021 on secondment from the Kumasi Technical University, where he served as a Senior Lecturer.

During the same period, he served as an Adjunct Lecturer at the Graduate School of KNUST from February 2013.

Interaction

During his interaction with the minister, he said he would work diligently with all the stakeholders including the teacher unions, agencies and other professional bodies in the education space.

He said education was at the heart of every Ghanaian and would work hard to ensure the development of the sector, adding that the inputs and suggestions of the various stakeholders were welcomed.

In addition, he said he would engage the stakeholders regularly to see how to improve the sector.

For his part, Dr Adutwum congratulated Dr Nkansah on his appointment and pledged to support him in the realisation of the objectives of the government to improve the education sector.

Charge

He told him that he should get down to the teaching and non-teaching staff of schools to know about their challenges for redress.

The minister also told him to endeavour to make employees of the service happy so that they could open up and work towards the development of the nation’s education.

He urged the Human Resource Directorate of the GES to work hard to get the best for teachers.
