Dr. Eric Nkansah Is Teacher, Not a Banker - Dr. Smart Sarpong Defends New GES Director-General

Senior Research Fellow at the Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Smart Sarpong, has sent a plea to the three Teacher Unions against the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to reconsider their decision.

The Teacher Unions consisting of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-G) are on strike over government's refusal to terminate the appointment of the new GES Director-General.

Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" discussion programme, Dr. Smart Sarpong debunked claims that Dr. Eric Nkansah is not a teacher, on which premise the teachers have objected to his appointment.

Opposing the contrary position of the teachers that GES Director-General is a banker, Dr. Smart Sarpong emphasized that "as at the time he moved to the Ministry of Education, he wasn't a banker. He was a teacher. He has also worked at the Education Ministry as Director in charge of Tertiary education . . . I think he has a blend, a combination of all that they need as a teacher".

He called on his colleagues to "give him (Dr. Eric Nkansah) the opportunity to demonstrate what he has. There are several other means to call for his head, for instance a misconduct, if he is underpeforming but this person is fresh. You don't know what he can offer...I will plead that they should allow Dr. Eric Nkansah the opportunity; let's watch what he has to offer the Ghana Education Service".
