Mamprugu Protest Against Nana Addo In The North East Region

Earlier today in Nalerigu in the capital of the North East Region, the youth of the region joined the 6th March parade in celebration of the 66th Independence day for our country.

In joining the celebration, the youth held placards with inscriptions such as Stop meddling in chieftaincy, I stand with Nayiri, Mamprugu over party politics, Mamprugu will remain long after you are gone among the many placards held during the celebrations.

These placards held by the youth of mamprugu are in opposition to the unnecessary interference and meddling into the chieftaincy conflict in Bawku over who has the legitimate right to occupy the Bawku skin by the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo.

Bawku has been part of mamprugu traditionally and administratively since the 17th Century until the British divided it for ease of administration. The Nayiri has been always been the kingmaker of the Bawku skin as to who is the paramount chief of the Bawku Traditional Area.

The President and his government have decided to meddle in the chieftaincy matters in Bawku on several occasions by declaring that the Kusasi chief is the legitimate Bawku Naba, a position that the President has no power by virtue of the 1992 constitution to take.

The meddling reached a crescendo when the Nayiri enskinned a new Bawku Naa on the 15th February 2023 resulting in an arrest warrant for the arrest of the Nayiri, his king makers and the newly enskinned Bawku Naa.

This is what has resulted in the protest by the youth of mamprugu at the 6th March parade with the placards.

The message to the President was simple, stop meddling in chieftaincy affairs.
