FemPower Outreach: Thank You for Taking a Big Risk - Frema Osei-Opare Salutes Akufo-Addo for Appointment as Ghana's 1st Female Chief of Staff

Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare has praised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his commitment to women empowerment and for appointing her as Ghana's first female Chief of Staff.

"I commend the President for taking a big risk in deciding to have a woman as Chief of Staff and I want to encourage you all that you do belong. You are where you are because you deserve to be there. It's not easy to be a woman leader . . . people don't expect you to be able to achieve anything. Be confident, be open-minded, do the best and you can be the best," she averred.

Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare was speaking as a Guest of Honour at the launch of the Fempower Outreach Program held at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Thursday.

The outreach program is in two folds:

-FemPower Mentorship and leadership training which will benefit 150 female employees within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

-FemPower Scholarship program.

Full Scholarship

The scholarship program will offer full scholarships to 10 females pursuing degrees in electrical engineering or computer science.

FemPower by this, aims to address the gender gap prevalent in ECG and open doors for more women to excel in these domains.

"ECG sits in a unique position to give back to our customers who patronise our services and keep the revenues coming in. While we are committed to our Corporate Social Responsibility, we also uphold the essence of investing correctly into the future of our company by targeting the best brains to join this world-class company.

This scholarship scheme is not a mere gesture; it is a resounding commitment to supporting the education of female student engineers by covering tuition, accommodation, learning materials, and feeding stipends. Some of ECG’s suppliers and service providers have pledged to provide work placements during the holidays for benefactors of the scheme and will receive additional training from our renowned ECG Training School" Madam Maataa Opare, Patron Of Power Queens Club stated.

Maataa, also speaking at the launch said it is essential to empower women, especially for the progress of ECG.

According to her, "it is essential to the progress of our beloved ECG that we EMPOWER women to break frontiers in leadership, promote their self-worth, give them the freedom to determine their own choices in their career path and influence change for themselves and others. The critical question arises: What do women bring to the table? The answer is we bring diversity and a unique perspective that enriches decision-making processes. Many women are born with an engrained attention to detail and essential point of view due to our experiences".

Power Queens Club

The Power Queens club, initially a welfare-oriented collective, has evolved into a formidable force, advocating for the best interests of all women within the company (ECG). The limited number of women in leadership positions, or the lack of interest and confidence to compete with the men for these positions, has become a worry. To mitigate this, the club, led by Maataa Opare, brainstormed on the best elevator for women's upliftment within ECG. This led to the birth of FemPower—an ambitious outreach program that intentionally develops talented women within ECG to become the next generation of leaders.

"FemPower is not just a concept; it is a commitment. Our call is not just for more women in engineering and leadership roles, but for qualified women who can contribute meaningfully to the growth and success of ECG. It is not about mere numbers; it is about expertise, capability, and diversity of thought. We envision FemPower becoming a lasting legacy, a testament to our commitment to gender diversity and the empowerment of women. As we embark on this journey, we invite each of you to join us in making FemPower a success—a feature of our company that will outlive us all" Maataa added.
