Appointing Ken Ofori-Atta as Senior Presidential Advisor Won't Augur Well for Bawumia - PPP Chairman

PPP National Chairman, Nana Ofori Owusu has scolded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for reappointing Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, into a leadership role in connection with the Finance Ministry.

The Finance Minister was dismissed during the President's ministerial reshuffle, ushering in Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam to replace Ken Ofori-Atta.

The removal of Ken Ofori-Atta came as joyful news to some Ghanaians as the Minister, months ago before the IMF 3 billion bailout for Ghana, came under intense pressure to either resign or be sacked by the President.

Members of Parliament of Ofori-Atta's own political party, the New Patriotic Party, championed the protest against him and the President, during a meeting, pleaded with the aggrieved MPs to allow Ken Ofori-Atta to conclude the IMF deal; afterwards, he (President) will take a decision on their petition.

The reshuffle which happened weeks ago saw the exit of the Finance Minister and other Ministers including the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu.

However, Ken Ofori-Atta's dismissal didn't last as he has been reassigned to the position of Senior Presidential Advisor and Special Envoy for International Finance and Private Sector Investments.

But Nana Ofori Owusu wonders why the President will reassign Ken Ofori-Atta.

He argued that Ken Ofori-Atta has been blamed on all fronts for the woes of the economy, "and if that is the case and you are moving him to the side, then you give him enhanced position, Senior Advisor on matters that affect the Finance Ministry".

To him, the President's refusal to let go of Ken Ofori-Atta "will not go well for the incoming candidate for the NPP", referring to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Nana Ofori gave these remarks on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" panel discussion show.
