I'm Happy EC Has Shelved Plans To Change Election Date From Dec 7 - Prez Akufo-Addo

President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has applauded the Electoral Commission for their engagement with the political parties in resolving the issues regarding the change of election date from December 7 to a date in the month of November.

The Seventh Day Adventists have proposed that Ghana's general elections should be rescheduled to a Tuesday in the month of November to avoid disrupting their Sabbath Day which they keep sacred and also to prevent disenfranchising some Ghanaians.

They believe November is a good month for all Ghanaian electorates to participate in the elections.

This proposal has been supported by many Ghanaians including the Chief Imam but the opposition National Democratic Congress has objected to it coming into force this year as planned by the Electoral Commission.

They petitioned the Commissioners to postpone the move to the year 2028.

Following series of deliberations, the Electoral Commission has agreed to effect the change but has deferred it to a later year which is to say this year's general elections may come off on December 7.

Delivering his 2024 State of the Nation Address in Parliament, President Akufo-Addo expressed satisfaction with the decision by the Electoral Commission.

"In discharging their responsibility, I urged the Electoral Commission to work with the political parties to iron out whatever problems there might be. And I'm happy that the Electoral Commission, after engaging the parties, has shelved plans to change the 7th December date", he told the House.

He called for continual cohesion between the political parties to ensuring a smooth electoral process.

"Politics after all has been described as the act of the possible and if that is what we are engaged in, it should not be beyond us to resolve the problems that come up and concentrate on working to build a happy and prosperous country we want. Government, on its part, will do what is expected of it to make sure that the reputation of Ghana is not damaged and the free will of the people is manifested at the end of the electoral process."
