KNUST VC Charges Students To Help Change Society

The Vice Chancellor (VC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has charged students, especially Social Scientists to come out with better sustainable and pragmatic solutions to help solve the ills of society in order to make it a better place to live in. Professor William Otoo Ellis was with the view that Social Scientists have embraced the comfort of sitting on the fence and criticising any and every policy without offering any better alternatives. Professor Ellis disclosed this in a Report to Congregation at the 45th Congregation of the College of Art and Social Sciences of the university. The Food Science and Technology don implored the graduands to help administrators to design and implement national policies and welfare programmes by utilising the skills and knowledge acquired from the university and uphold integrity in the stewardship of every resource entrusted in their care. The VC acknowledged that the Faculty of Social Sciences has suffered divergent discourse, some positive and others negative in a Science and Technology environment but added that for KNUST to make the requisite impact in national development and society, the linkage between Science and Technology programme and programme in the humanity is significant. A total of 1,043 students from seven departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences were decorated. 58 students had first class, 529 graduated with second class (upper division) while 399 and 57 students graduated with second class (lower division) and Pass respectively. The best graduating student from the College of Art and Social Sciences, Miss Nana Fatima Daudu, a Nigerian student, in her valedictory speech thanked the university authorities and the government of Ghana for giving her and her foreign colleagues the opportunity to study in Ghana adding that her stay has been pleasant and memorable and Ghana will always be in her heart. Miss Fatima advised her graduating colleagues not to rest on their laurels adding that the true work begin now. She advised them to continue the journey and become even more determined and focused than ever to make the change they want to see and to make KNUST proud.
