Nima: Youth Close Down 'Filthy' Lorry Station

Some youth in Nima have forcibly closed down the main market lorry station in the area, saying the place is messy and inaccessible whenever it rains. They said their action would pave way for renovation works to be carried out in and around the station. The demonstrating youth forced drivers to park their vehicles along the road. Newsmen who visited the station reported that the place was covered with mud. You have to be careful when taking your steps; else you will dip your fit into thick mud, they reported. Mohammed Sani, a youth leader in the area said, anytime rain falls the place would be like lake and nobody can walk [through]. He said the condition there has made life uncomfortable for residents, explaining that the drivers dont do their work so we have to stop them so that they will do something about it. Abu Yalari, an executive member of the drivers union said the youth embarked on the demonstration on Monday and 'sacked' the drivers from the station. The youth, he said, flattened vehicles tyres and burnt tyres in the market. It took the intervention of personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service and Nima Police Station to quell the youth. He was hopeful by the close of day, the place would be properly fixed for the drivers to move back.
