FDB Impounds Unwholesome Wele From The Netherlands

A 4-footer container of unwholesome meet products imported from the Netherlands into the country to be processed into wele, a local delicacy, has been impounded by the food and Drugs board (FDB) in Takoradi. The products include cow heads, a large quantity of hide, intestines, tails, feet and other parts. When the container was opened at the port last Friday, the overpowering stench was more than enough to compel port and FDB officials to run for cover. Officials of Minka Tawiah Enterprise in Kumasi which imported the items were yet to be arrested as of press time yesterday. According to the FDB and veterinary officers at the Takoradi port, the bill of laden accompanying the container indicated that the consignment was 28 pellets of 26,500kgs of salted cow head pieces. However, port officials became suspicion of the overpowering stench and water dripping from the container, which prompted them to open it. They expressed shock at the fact that animal hide and other waste parts discarded in Europe could be allowed into the country. Veterinary offices told the Daily Graphic that it was sad that the country did not have an acceptable quality standard to guide the importation of many foreign goods. They said the consignment was not good for consumption, not even for animal feed, and that it was clear that it had been declared waste abroad but strangely found its way into the country.
