Teacher Assaults MTTU Boss

A Teacher at the Osu Presbyterian Primary School, Osu in Accra has found himself in the grips of the law for beating up ACP Awuni Angwubutoge, the national Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), at Adabraka, near The Trust Bank. The suspect, John Kottoh, 45, was said to have driven through a one way lane and when he was spotted and questioned by the police boss, he got infuriated, grabbed the throat of the police chief and pushed him down. He is currently resting in the cells of the MTTU after he was remanded by the Accra Motor Court. He will re-appear on August 2, 2011. Confirming the incident to DAILY GUIDE, ASP Augustine O. Akrofi, the MTTU Staff Officer, indicated that on July 12, 2011, after returning from the hospital around 12pm, ACP Awuni spotted a taxi cab driving through a one way and thus facing an oncoming vehicle. The taxi with registration number GR 181Q was being driven by John Kottoh from Cathedral to Accra. Upon reaching The Trust Bank area, the suspect decided to use the Okai Mensah road towards the Akosombo Textile factory which is a one way. When he was questioned by the police commander, the suspect allegedly accosted Awuni and grabbed his throat, threatening to beat him up. In what could be described as a road rage, the suspect furiously pushed him down and drove off. The staff officer said on July 18, 2011, the suspect was again spotted by a policeman on duty at Cathedral around 1:30pm, crossing a red light and was arrested. At the police station, he was identified by the police commander as the man who assaulted him. Suspect John Kottoh was put before court and remanded to reappear on August 2, 2011 for trial. Meanwhile, in a telephone interview with DAILY GUIDE, ACP Awuni Angwubutoge confirmed that he was indeed assaulted. He said after returning from the hospital that day, he realized that the traffic was intense. He said saw the taxi cab driving through a one way, failing to heed the mandatory road marking towards Accra. I then blocked him with my vehicle to question him and possibly arrest him, he said. The suspect, who was so offended, and threatened to teach me a lesson, held my shirt, shook me and pushed me down. ACP said suspect John Kottoh drove away, leaving him to his fate.
