Lecturers Threaten Strike

University lecturers are threatening a strike at the end of this month following concerns over unpaid book and research allowances from last academic year. The teachers say they will not return to the lecture halls when school reopens next month if the allowances are not paid in full by then. Mr Samuel Asiedu-Addo, president of the University Teachers Association of Ghana in an interview with Joy News said the same thing happened last year which generated serious agitations on campus. When asked whether the ministry of Education had been contacted on the matter, Mr Asiedu-Addo said the matter was not for the Ministry of Education because they were doing all they could to address the matter, but for the Finance Ministry as this is where the money would come from. He said the Finance Ministry has promised to pay them at the end of the month, but with only 3 days to go, the university teachers are getting concerned. Mr Asiedu pointed out that the lecturers had not been refused the payment of their book and research allowances, but had been told that they would be paid by the end of this month which is on Friday but had still not been paid anything and this was serving as a source of worry. He said UTAG members had a meeting last Thursday to discuss the issue and that a strike could result because the teachers are not happy at all.
