THE DEMOCRATIC Freedom Party (DFP) has taken a swipe at its former Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman, Peter Amo, for condemning moves by the party founder to hold unity talks with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Amo is reported to have said that DFP National Chairman, Dr Obed Yao Asamoah, has betrayed the rank and file of the party by holding merger talks with the NDC.
He has therefore vowed to lead the party�s campaign in the Brong Ahafo Region to make sure all DFP members in the region join the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) due to the alleged betrayal of the founder of the party.
However, officials of the DFP say Mr Amo is no more with the party and cannot therefore speak for, or on behalf of the party. According to the DFP, the former B/A chairman deserted the party a year before the 2008 general elections.
�Mr Amo is no longer with the DFP and has no moral or legal right to speak on behalf of the party or for the party in any capacity,� Nester Hoeyi, DFP�s Press Officer told DAILY GUIDE in a telephone interview. He added, �The DFP has nothing to do with him, he is an imposter and his conduct is criminal.�
The Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of the party, Nana Boadi Antoh, who corroborated the claims of the press officer, warned the former chairman to mind his own business since he left the party about three years ago.
According to Mr Antoh, there was no iota of truth in what the former chairman said about the members of the party in the region kicking against the proposed merger talks, saying, �We are solidly behind our national chairman.�
Mr Antoh pointed out that the party had set up a committee to negotiate with the NDC to see the possible ways of coming together again. He disclosed that the committee would soon come out with their report and the findings would determine the way forward.
The DFP was formed by Dr Obed Asamoah, a former National Chairman of the NDC and other disgruntled NDC functionaries following the NDC�s acrimonious congress in Koforidua in 2006.
With the Rawlingses losing their grip on the NDC after Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings� humiliating defeat at the Sunyani congress, Dr Asamoah has expressed some interest in going back to the ruling party.
