Quack Contractors To Be Eliminated

The Association of Building and Civil Contractors (ABCECG) says it is ready to eliminate quack contractors in the country. To this end, it has instituted the maiden National Building and Civil Contractors Excellence Awards to be held in December this year. The primary objective is to promote the execution of standard building civil works, as well as address shoddy work. Rockson Dogbegah, Chairman of the technical Committee, Association of Building and Civil Contractors (ABCECG), said the aim of the noble excellence awards is to encourage excellence among contractors. Sadly the local contractor today hasnt got a good image. There is a perception that we do shoddy works and are not very professional. Let me concede that some of us are guilty of this accusation but definitely there are a lot of us who do very quality job. We are determined to reverse this trend and the process has already begun. He pointed out that his outfit was addressing these problems through a regular capacity building programmes for contractors. Mr. Dogbegah stressed the need to set up a regulator and equip contractors in a favourable environment. He commended the Ghana Institution of Engineers, Ghana Institution of Architects, Ghana Institution of Surveyors, Public Procurement Authority among other institutions for helping in the planning and evolving the criteria for the awards. In all, the contractors will vie for 15 categories including the ultimate prize, the national building contractor of the year award. There will be awards for outstanding quality and workmanship, outstanding health safety and environmental management and outstanding time and site management and the best timely paying client and best consultant. A set of criteria has specifically been developed based on which the four classes of contractors, D1K1 up to D2K2 contractors will be rated and awarded.
