WAEC Investigates WASSCE Invigilators

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) says it has begun investigating some invigilators and teachers who helped their students to cheat during the 2011 WASSCE. WAEC declared that those found culpable will be prosecuted appropriately. Agnes Tei-Cudjoe the principal Public Affairs Officer at WAEC told Citi News that she believed that the students who had cheated could only do so if they had help from outside and this implicated their examination supervisors and invigilators. We heard that in certain schools candidates were found with photocopied answers in the examination room. When this happens, it means that the candidate has had assistance from outside, either an invigilator or supervisor, because they (invigilators) are placed in every room with only about 30 students and so if the students have access to answers, it means somebody worked it from outside, photocopied the answers and brought it into the room. So in this case, we will ask our boss for the mandate to take action against these candidates, the supervisors and invigilators. The council released provisional results of over 133,000 out of the over 148,000 candidates who sat for the exams over the weekend to enable the various universities to conclude their admissions for the 2011/2012 academic year. The results of candidates presented by 81 schools have however been withheld pending investigations into the various examination malpractices. Agnes Tei-Cudjoe assured that all the withheld results of about 849 candidates will be released as soon as the council concludes investigations into the exam malpractices.
