Government has expressed worry over the perceived corruption in the management of tertiary institutions in the country, a situation that undermines the provision of quality education.
Government says it will become difficult for parents and students to absorb part of the cost of funding tertiary education if corruption in the management of schools is not checked.
Speaking to Citi News, Deputy Education Minister, Mahama Ayariga added that the proposal to assist private tertiary schools was under consideration; however it remained dicey since it was unusual to invest public funds in universities that were privately owned.
�We are still at a debate as to the extent to which government can assist private institutions with funds from the GETfund, and the various regulatory and accountability mechanisms of government have put some restraints on the decision.
�For instance a private institution which although provides a service that is social, nonetheless remains private, so to what extent can you pick money to assist a private institution in terms of infrastructure and own the infrastructure as a private entity?�
He added that government will however not relinquish its role of supporting tertiary institutions both public and private fund their courses.
