2 Highway Robbers Killed

THE TWO suspected highway robbers who were shot dead during a shoot-out with the police on the Kintampo-Tamale Highway last weekend have still not been identified. The Kintampo Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Desmond Boampong, on Tuesday told Daily Guide that nobody had come to identify the deceased robbers despite several announcements on the local media. The two are currently being kept at the Techiman Holy Family Hospital Morgue after they were transferred from the Kintampo Hospital a day after their death. The police boss said the corpses would be disposed of after two weeks if nobody comes forth to identify them. The two suspected armed robbers were shot dead by the police patrol team during a shoot-out on the Dawadawa-Kawampe road in the Brong Ahafo Region at about 11:00pm during the weekend. This was after they blocked the main Kintampo-Tamale road to facilitate their operation. They were said to be part of a group of seven robbers who embarked on a robbery spree that night. Superintendent Boampong said immediately the Benz Bus pulled up, the alleged robbers emerged from a nearby bush, where they were hiding, and ordered the passengers to get out of the bus. Just about the same time, a police patrol team which was escorting a number of vehicles from Buipe to Kintampo arrived at the scene. Upon seeing the police, the alleged robbers started to fire at them. The police quickly returned fire and the two were killed on the spot while the rest managed to escape back into the bush. He said the police could not pursue them in the bush because it was late in the night. Superintendent Boampong further mentioned that the police went back to the scene to comb for the other robbers the next day, but did not find them. According to him, no further arrest had been made since the incident happened.
