Arsenal 1 Swansea 0

ARSENE WENGER had a blooper from Swansea goalkeeper Michael Vorm to thank as his new-look Arsenal side bagged their first Premier League win of the season. Wenger handed debuts to deadline signings Per Mertesacker and Mikel Arteta, while Swansea were without boss Brendan Rodgers following the death of his father. And it was Andrey Arshavin who claimed the goal on 40 minutes that gave the home side all three points, slotting into an empty net after Vorm's throw had hit the unsuspecting Angel Rangel. Welshman Aaron Ramsey had the first chance a shot that flew high and wide to the delight of the travelling fans. The Gunners continued to press, with Arteta driving a 25-yard free-kick into the wall. But Swansea almost snatched a shock lead on seven minutes, when Danny Graham got in front of Mertesacker only to be denied by the acrobatic Wojciech Szczesny. Arsenal were soon back on the offensive, and a quick break saw Arshavin release Theo Walcott. The England man slipped his shot under the advancing keeper, but Vorm had got just enough on the ball to allow on-loan Steven Caulker to clear in front of his own net. A neat exchange between Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Frimpong, back from suspension, opened up space at the edge of the area only for the young midfielder dragged his shot wide. And on 25 minutes, Swans midfielder Kemy Agustien was booked for tugging back Arteta to halt another Arsenal breakaway. On 35 minutes, Swans full-back Neil Taylor fired over a dangerous cross which flew right through the Arsenal six-yard area. But the Gunners then went down the other end and scored thanks to Vorm's howler. The goalkeeper tried a quick roll out on the right of the area, only to hit the heels of defender Rangel and give Arshavin an empty net to roll the ball into. Swansea made a strong start to the second half and Walcott was cautioned for clattering into Taylor. After 53 minutes, Laurent Koscielny followed him into Stuart Atwell's notebook after scything down Sinclair 20 yards out. The former Chelsea man took the free-kick himself and clipped the ball against the top of crossbar. At the other end, Van Persie shrugged off two defenders before bursting into the centre of the Swansea area and was unfortunate to see his curling shot hit the outside of the right-hand post. The Dutch forward then blasted over the bar, having been set up at the edge of the box by Ramsey. With half an hour left, Arshavin was replaced by Benayoun, the Israel captain making his Arsenal debut. There was a stoppage when Agustien went down holding the back of his leg, and hobbled off with a hamstring problem. Mark Gower came on. Arsenal slowly started to build a period of sustained pressure, if without really stretching the Swansea backline. With 16 minutes left, Frimpong was replaced by French youngster Francis Coquelin. Swansea made a change when Stephen Dobbie came on for Joe Allen. Van Persie was withdrawn for the closing 10 minutes and his replacement, Morocco striker Marouane Chamakh almost had an instant impact with a header on goal.
