Sekou Nkrumah: I've Resigned From The NDC

Sekou Nkrumah, son of Ghanas first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and former Acting Coordinator of the National Youth Council (NYC) under the Mills-led NDC administration says he has severed all ties with the ruling NDC. In a move that is sure to surprise political analysts, Sekou however, stopped short of saying he has joined ranks with the Convention Peoples Party (CPP). Explaining the rationale behind his decision to ditch the NDC in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on PeaceFM's "Kokrokoo" Morning Show, Sekou stated that it was borne out of the fact that his sister, Samia Yaba Nkrumah has just been elected Chairperson of the CPP and also his continuous stay in the NDC might be a stumbling block to his sister's political ambition. If I continue being in the NDC I think it will appear to be an obstacle to her (Samia) ambition to revive the CPP. The present situation will demand that I resign and moreover the role I am playing in the NDC is not a very significant role and compared to Samias role, I think one of us would have to concede and I would have to make that concession, he stated. According to him, he does not want to create the impression that Nkrumahs children are fighting each other by belonging to different parties. Though indecisive on his next move, Sekou was resolute in his quest to still be a political activist. I still wish the NDC goodluck and I wish the CPP also good luck. However, I would have wished both parties would work togetherbut I will still be a political activist and keep an eye on political development. I have not made a decision on joining any political party yetcompared to the role Samia is playing in the CPP I think mine is not too significant and I need to resign, he reiterated. Known for his forthrightness, Dr. Sekou Nkrumah was emphatic that the existence of the NDC was an obstacle to the rising fortunes of his "fathers party", the CPP. Reconciling his earlier assertions that Samia won the CPP Chairmanship by virtue of the fact that she is the daughter of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and lacks the capabilities to lead the CPP, Dr. Sekou Nkrumah maintained that it is up to his sister to prove if she can lead the CPP or not. I dont know if she has the capability to do sothe biggest obstacle to the CPP is the NDC and I think so far as the NDC is there; there cannot be any revival in the CPP, he added. Dr Sekou Nkrumah officially joined the NDC on the day John Dramani Mahama was unveiled as the running mate to then candidate Mills at the KAMA International Conference Centre for election 2008. A fierce critic of the Mills-led NDC administration, he has on several occasions voiced out that President Mills is not dynamic and lacks the strong will to lead the country. Some believed that perhaps his constant criticisms of the President led to his dismissal as the acting Coordinator of the NYC.
