Kufuor: Ghana Telecom Sale Was Best Achievement

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has stated that the sale of Ghana Telecom to Vodafone UK was one of the most important achievements his government chalked for the benefit of Ghanaians. According to Mr Kufuor, the Vodafone transaction was painstakingly entered into by his government to rescue the then unproductive and debt ridden Ghana Telecom. Speaking on the Good Evening Ghana Show on Metro TV on Tuesday September 13, ex President Kufuor also categorically denied ever gaining personally from the sale of the state owned Telecommunications Company. He said the quick sale of the company saved the country from falling into the credit crunch which caused the collapse of some big companies worldwide. That transaction was done with the highest best interest of Ghana as a single motive and I believe it was the singular achievement of my Government for the benefit of Ghana. There was not a slightest hint of corruption in that transaction. We just didnt wake up one fine morning and package Ghana Telecom to give to Vodafone No! . There were processes, Ghana Telecom was not functioning well at all, it was over laden with debt, it suffered from under employment, it had personnel of over 4,000 which really wasnt productive. I believe it was the best thing that could have happened to this country because if it had delayed two three months longer Ghana would have been in a very sad and sorry state.
