Wayne Rooney v Fernando Torres

WE assess how Man Utd's in-form striker and Chelsea's under-fire hitman compared in yesterday's big clash at Old Trafford. GOAL THREAT ROONEY always looked dangerous with his darting runs and he kept John Terry busy. The only way Chelsea could stop him at times was to foul him. Torres made a great run and a smart finish for his first goal of the season. The Spaniard then missed two sitters one of which was an open goal. TEAMWORK THE UNITED striker battled hard and often dropped back into midfield to help out when he needed to. His effort can never be called into question as he drove United forward. Torres set up Ramires in the first half, who should have scored. He also produced plenty of running to give Chelsea options going forward. IMPACT ROONEY shaded this battle but it could have been different had Torres taken his chances. The two players hit the target but it was Rooney's contribution that was more impressive. Torres' strike did give Chelsea hope but when he missed the open goal, the confidence quickly drained away from Blues. VERDICT ROONEY continued his great start to the season with his ninth goal in the Premier League this term. He looked dangerous and unselfishly teed up Dimitar Berbatov, only for the Bulgarian to miss. Torres finally got off the mark for the season and he looked lively. But he will be haunted by his horror miss.
