The Anti-Narcotics Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), in a joint operation with Narcotics Control Board (NACOB), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Judiciary and the Military Intelligence (MI) Unit of the Ghana Armed Forces, has destroyed approximately 3.8 tonnes of cannabis sativa, popularly known as �wee�, at Bundase near Tema in the Greater Accra Region.
The exhibits, seized mostly from peddlers since the early 1990s, had a face value of about GH�8,000.It was set ablaze at the Bundase Military Training Camp after an Accra High Court gave the order.
Narrating factors surrounding the destruction, the Deputy Director of CID Operations, Superintendent Faakye Kumi, noted that the exhibits stored at the CID Headquarters were overstuffed.
There was therefore the need to destroy some of the old exhibits to accommodate fresh ones.Some of the exhibits were seized in operations without arresting suspects while in other cases, the latter were arrested together with the stuff.
The police, since the early parts of the 1990s, have made efforts to arrest the culprits to no avail.In some instances, they were successful in arresting the suspects but others have remained at large.
The CID, therefore, after 20 years of storing these exhibits, thought it wise to get rid of them to make room for fresh ones.At Bundase, the team had a hectic time offloading the tones of wee as a downpour threatened the exercise.
Reporters were also not spared as they had to grudgingly wade through the mud to cover the event.Supt. Kumi sounded a word of caution to the youth who he said were much to blame for the drug menace.
He noted that the security operatives were not going to deal with the drug pushers with kids� gloves as they sought to intensify their operations to bring the menace to its minimum.
He stressed that suspects who would be found culpable would be arraigned and convicted.The Deputy Director of Operations was assisted by the Director of the Anti-Narcotics Unit, DSP Kofi Adjei Tuadzra.
