Suspend Strike - NLC Directs Doctors

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) to suspend its intended strike action from Saturday with immediate effect whilst the arbitration body find ways to resolve the current impasse with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. The GMA on Friday declared a strike action, saying it has resolved to lay down their tools after an emergency national executive council meeting on Thursday. In a statement, the GMA said it does not foresee their grievances being met by close of business on Friday and has therefore instructed all doctors to stop work and hold themselves in readiness for further instructions. However, the Labour Commision in a statement this Friday noted that since the decision directly affects the health sector, it is pleading with the doctors to rescind their decision and allow the commission to resolve the dispute with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission through compulsory arbitration. According to the Commission, it would set a process in motion for a settlement of the dispute between the doctors and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.
