Two AMA Workers Grabbed For Fraud

Two workers of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) have been arraigned before the Accra Community Magistrate Court, presided by Ali Baba Abature for issuing counterfeit receipts to rate payers. The suspects, Mark Acquah, 40 and Eric Kwabena Osei, 35 who are both revenue collectors, pleaded not guilty to the charges when they appeared before the court on Friday. Acquah was charged with issuing counterfeit receipts while Osei was charged with aiding and abetment of crime. The first accused person Acquah was granted bail in the sum of GH1,000 with two sureties while his accomplice was also granted bail in the sum of GH300 with one surety. Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecuting officer, Yaw Twumasi Ankrah told the court that a few days ago the AMA internal auditor at the Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metro dispatched mobilization team to collect revenue from rate payers in and around Dansoman. According to him, on reaching Chris View Hotel around Dansoman, the collectors detected a fake receipt displayed by management of the hotel with number 0607025. He said the management of the hotel mentioned Acquah as the one who issued it but they decided to conclude the exercise before arresting the culprit. He revealed that they moved to Mamprobi where they saw a similar fake receipt with the same serial number and the ratepayers there also mentioned Acquah the source of the fake receipts. Explaining further, he said the AMA arrested the revenue collector and handed him over to the police. In addition, he noted that a similar receipt was found on Osei during investigation. Mr. Twumasi said the total amount of money collected from the unsuspecting rate payers amounted to GH500, adding that they were put before court after police investigations.
