The Bojo Beach at Botianor in Accra was turned into an Olympics stadium last Saturday when hundreds thronged the place to have fun at the Citi Business Olympics.
It was a day when corporate persons became athletes, footballers and �fishermen� just to mention a few. It is an annual event set aside for a gathering of corporate institutions to play a variety of games and have fun as they energize themselves to round up the working calendar.
Over 25 corporate institutions turned up with staff from the managerial level down to the steward, all in readiness to participate in games and compete for the enviable trophies at stake.
It was all fun as staff of various corporate institutions from the banking and finance, manufacturing, among others, came together to share ideas and forge relationships. The event, which is in its 6th year, is one of many entertainment programs organized annually by Citi FM, an Accra-based private radio station. There were competitions in five-aside football, volleyball, lime and spoon race, table tennis, sack race, tug of war and the row- your-boat challenge among others.
Organizers said this year�s event was the best so far. Among the reasons for the huge success was the introduction of the all-new row-your boat competition which had staff of corporate institutions rowing away on the sea like real fishermen.
�This is the first time most of them are paddling if not all of them, but they went all the distance and they were actually rowing like professional fishermen,� exclaimed Nii Tettey Attram, Sales Manager at Citi FM. He attributed the huge success of this year�s Olympics to the change of venue to the shore. �It brings a whole new dimension to the whole thing,� he noted, adding, �When you get in the ride on the boat across the lagoon before getting into the sand- the 5-aside football, the volleyball, people wearing bikinis and diving into the sea, I think the sea front is priceless.�
Mr. Attram added, �Organizers intend introducing swimming and running in next year�s event after the huge success from the row-your-boat challenge.� The Programmes Manager of Citi FM, Jessica Opare Saforo, said her outfit was patting itself on the back because of the extra-ordinary showing on Saturday. She stated, �Feedback we�ve had from the companies has been absolutely amazing and we are very happy as organizers because when you call people to come for an event and they come in this kind of numbers, you know that you�ve done a good job.
�Let�s see what next year looks like and if our trends are anything to go by, we know that we are going to have a better Business Olympics 2012.�
Touching on the organization of the program and its success, Jessica noted, �We are one of the best event organizers in the country and if we say a show is going to be good, it always is so if there any people out there who hear us making a call of any sort for people to partake in a Citi FM event, they should take it seriously and come out in support�. On his part, Operations Manager of Citi FM, Bernard Avle noted that the event was not only about competing to win trophies but also to come together and have fun and shed the stress accumulated all year long. At the games, Gentrac Investment Ltd won the women�s sack race competition, the women�s 50-meter race and the women�s lime and spoon race.
Headline sponsor of the Citi Business Olympics, Tigo, won a trophy in the women�s volley ball. Ashfoam Company carried home the trophy in the five-aside football competition. The men�s category of the tug-of-war went to UT Holdings as Ezi Savings and Loans Company secured the trophy in the scrabble competition.
Dannnex Company�s women made an impressive showing as they snatched the tug-of-war trophy. John Agyekum of Rancard Solutions beat all to win the chess competition as Holiday Inn happily carried home trophies in the men�s volley ball and men�s sack race. Global Media Alliance, owners of Happy FM, Y FM and e.TV put up an impressive show as they snatched the trophy in the all-new row-your-boat challenge as IFS won the men�s lime and spoon race.
